The Metropolitan Electric Railroad:
-played a vital role in the growth of Newmarket
-it resembled the look of a street car and connected Newmarket with Toronto from 1899-1930
-it was a 53 mile long line that followed a route north along Yonge Street to Aurora, then turned at Mulock Drive to connect to Newmarket's historic core, and then finally headed further north to Keswick
-the tracks ran up the middle of Newmarket's Main St, with a train station at the King George Hotel
-in 1907 the train was re-route off Main St to the west

- Provincially significant – one of the earliest reinforced concrete arches in Canada.
- Built in 1909 by the Toronto and York Radial Railway Company.
- An outstanding example of modern functional bridge design.
- One of the few of its kind, the Railway Arch was preserved in 1979 by the Town of Newmarket and the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority.
